FELT exhibitions
A Felt Feeling: From Home to Handbag
Curated by Ed Keall, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto
November 8, 2003 to April 12, 2004
Toronto's
Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) presents A Felt Feeling: From Home
to Handbag, until Monday, April 12, 2004. On display
in the ROM's European Temporary Exhibition gallery, this new ROM-curated
exhibition will explore the ingenious ways in which felt has been used
throughout history and today. Drawn mainly from the ROM's rarely-seen
permanent collection of ethnographic and fashion design felts, this
intimate exhibition will be augmented by several external loaned pieces,
including four original pieces by Toronto-based visual artist Kathryn
Walter.
A Felt Feeling will illustrate felt's little-known
versatility, explaining its physical characteristics and how it is manufactured.
It will also explore the historical connection between felt and the
sheep-herding societies in which felt was most widely used.
