Compact Living, Toronto Offsite Design Festival at Umbra

The Umbra Concept Store, Toronto
January 2017

The Toronto Design Offsite Festival presents ‘Compact Living’, a signature exhibition in partnership with Umbra, to discover ways to maximize minimal space. Eleven Canadian designers come together to explore the state of modern living, and the current realities of housing in urban environments. Artists and designers include Aubry / Levesque, Chifen Cheng, Alissa Coe, Libs Elliott, Kathryn Walter – FELT, Simone Ferkul, Harbour, Hinterland Design, Char Kennedy, Linus Kung, and Rainville-Sangaré.

This FELT file folder and magazine holder is designed and made by Kathryn Walter. At 10” wide x 11” long x 10” high, it will sit on the floor or on a desk and can be filled to an increasing capacity. It is made from a natural grey industrial wool felt ¼” thick that provides a sturdy form. The design makes use of this dense, firm felt to hold structure through simple folds. Using a 10” piece of felt cut from a standard manufacturer’s roll at 60” wide, the design maximizes the yield of material. Two wood dowels are fed through holes in the felt and secured with wood at each end to support, raise and maintain an elegant form. The felt rolls up and the wood flat packs for compact packaging and shipping.
